“The decision by Earl’s restaurant to import beef from a Kansas supplier is very disappointing to Saskatchewan farmers.” That is the opinion of the PC Party’s agriculture critic, John Goohsen.
Mr. Goohsen continued “I agree with Earl’s saying that all animals should be treated humanely, but I find the term ‘certified humane’ appalling. As a cattle farmer myself, I know our voluntary humane practices likely exceed their certified standards. Abusing animals is not only wrong morally, it ultimately affects the bottom line when it’s time to sell them.”
“The majority of Saskatchewan beef goes to feedlots and packing plants in Alberta. This decision affects us as well. We are struggling through an economic downturn and this is just another blow to rural Saskatchewan.”
Goohsen concluded by saying “The notion that someone we don't know somewhere else says they take more care in the raising of food animals needs to stop. Misleading advertising on humane handling, hormone use and antibiotic use should also end.”
