The pile of scrap tires left over from the closing of Assiniboia Rubber Recyclers Inc and Prairie Rubber Corp is not only an eyesore, but a safety hazard, and something needs to be done about it.
Wood River PC Party candidate, Brian Archer, said “One solution would be for the government to find a buyer for the plant and put it back in operation. This would create employment for the people of Assiniboia, and it would get rid of a terrible eyesore and safety hazard. If that can’t happen, and after all these years it seems unlikely that it will, then the government needs to find another tire recycling company to pick up the pile and get it out of town.”
“This pile of tires is a breeding ground for rats and mosquitoes. With the amount of tires in this pile, Assiniboia and district would be in dire peril if that tire pile were to start on fire for some reason.” added Archer.
Archer added “MLA Huyghebaert was very vocal about the plant’s closing in 2006 when he was a member of the opposition. However, while he was sitting on the government side of the Legislature, he was content to watch the permanent closure of the facility and sell off of the equipment.”
Archer concluded by saying, “The Wall government has had ample time to find a remedy to this situation. They want people to think they can move mountains, so let them start with this mountain of tires. It is the right thing for the environment and the people of Assiniboia deserve better than this.”
