The PC Party of Saskatchewan demands answers from the Saskatchewan Party on Viterra-Bunge merger
Regina, SK – A few short months after the provincial election, and it is apparent that Scott Moe and the Saskatchewan Party haven’t learned anything. Besides defending their abysmal performance in regulating foreign farmland ownership, Saskatchewan residents were recently shocked to learn of a successful Viterra-Bunge merger. The merger will suck billions of dollars out of the provincial economy, and cost countless jobs. It has halted two major projects that were supposed to proceed in the province. The merger will cost Saskatchewan producers approximately $770 million in annual revenue.
“When you put that on top of ever-increasing land prices and the cost of production, it will be almost impossible for Saskatchewan farmers to remain in business,” said Rose Buscholl, Leader of the Progressive Conservative Party of Saskatchewan, who questioned the silence coming from the Sask Party ranks. “It’s hard to believe that the intent of the Sask Party is to push out our Saskatchewan farmers to make way for large foreign corporate entities. It is obvious that the Sask Party just doesn’t care about the people of Saskatchewan especially our farmers. Farming is what built this province, and it is stunning to see Scott Moe and the Sask Party sell everything off to the highest bidder.”
Bunge is an American company with headquarters in Missouri. It is the same company where the registered lobbyist has donated thousands of dollars to the Sask Party.
“Our money will be going to an American company which has no problem paying to get a spot at the table where our governing body allows them, ” said Buscholl, who also pointed to the looming threat of U.S. tariffs further hampering the provincial economy.
“The role of government is not only to act as good stewards of our land, resources and tax dollars, but to also protect the population from greed and corruption. It is hard to protect and stand up for people when the government is the greedy and corrupt” said Buscholl. “It’s time for Scott Moe and the Sask Party to come out of hiding and start looking after Saskatchewan instead of trying to bankrupt the people and the province,” she said.
